Every parent wants their child to grow healthy, strong, confident and happy. Childhood is a period of rapid physical, emotional and mental development, and healthy habits established during these early years can have lasting benefits.
Here are ten simple ways parents can support their child’s overall well-being.
1. Serve a Balanced and Varied Diet
Children need a variety of nutritious foods to support growth and development. Include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, pulses, milk or dairy products and appropriate sources of protein.
Traditional Indian foods such as dal, roti, rice, khichdi, curd, vegetables, fruits, idli, dosa and poha can all form part of a balanced diet.
Try to limit highly processed foods, sugary drinks and foods that contain excessive salt or sugar. WHO recommends a varied diet based mainly on nutritious, minimally processed foods. (World Health Organization)
2. Encourage Water Regularly
Make water the child’s usual drink. Children who are busy playing may not always remember to drink, especially during hot weather.
3. Establish a Regular Sleep Routine
Sleep plays an important role in physical growth, learning, memory, mood and behaviour.
Try to maintain consistent sleeping and waking times, including on weekends whenever possible.
4. Make Physical Activity Fun
Running, cycling, dancing, swimming, playing cricket or simply playing outdoors helps children remain active.
Physical activity supports healthy muscles, bones and motor development. (World Health Organization)
5. Teach Good Hand Hygiene
Teach your child to wash their hands properly before eating, after using the toilet, after returning home and after coughing or sneezing.
6. Keep Vaccinations Up to Date
Maintain your child’s vaccination records and follow the immunisation schedule recommended for your child.
7. Look After Dental Health
Encourage regular brushing and age-appropriate dental care from an early age.
8. Support Emotional Health
Ask about your child’s day. Listen when they speak. Encourage them to express happiness, sadness, fear and frustration without feeling embarrassed.
9. Schedule Preventive Health Visits
Regular paediatric visits provide opportunities to monitor growth, development, nutrition, vaccination and other aspects of your child’s health.
10. Don’t Ignore Persistent Changes
Changes in appetite, activity, behaviour, sleep or growth do not necessarily indicate an illness, but persistent or concerning changes deserve medical attention.
Building Healthy Habits One Day at a Time
Parents don’t need to make everything perfect. Small, consistent habits can make a meaningful difference.
